Castle Hayne runs at a different scale
Along Castle Hayne Road, lots average north of two acres — a completely different job from a quarter-acre city yard. Long driveways to edge and blow off, wooded property lines, and a lot more square footage to cut. Most Castle Hayne properties land in our $85 (1 acre) or $165 (2+ acres) tiers; the quote form reads the parcel's recorded acreage from New Hanover County, so the tier is set honestly before we ever roll out — no re-quoting in the driveway.
Limestone underneath, and what it does to your water
The town gave its name to the Castle Hayne aquifer — a wedge of limestone and sandy limestone that is the most productive aquifer in North Carolina. Water pulled from it runs hard to very hard. If you irrigate from a well, that's the white crust on sprinkler heads and the spotting on hardscape; it's mineral, not a lawn problem, and it's worth knowing before anyone sells you a fertilizer fix for it.
A farming town that never fully stopped
In the early 1900s Hugh MacRae recruited Dutch immigrant farmers to the land around the Castle Hayne depot. The soil fought them, but the families who stuck it out — the Swarts among them — built a flower-bulb industry that was strong enough for the state to open a research station here in 1947. That horticultural streak is still in the area's nurseries and in the older planted lots we maintain. Practically, it means established beds, mature specimen trees, and plenty of leaf and pine-needle load come fall.
