Why mulch matters more in sandy soil

Coastal soil drains fast — great after a storm, tough on plant roots in July. A proper 2–3 inch mulch layer slows evaporation, keeps root zones cooler, and breaks down into organic matter that sandy soil badly needs. It also smothers the weeds that otherwise love an open bed.

When to refresh
